Story
I was chuffed to get my hands on 1 barrel worth of Semillon from a friendly producer in Jan Juc (next to Torquay on the Great Ocean Road). They manage the small block with low chemical inputs and minimal irrigation. It was especially nice because the vineyard is located only a few hundred metres from my old share house.
I helped pick the grapes into the rickety old trailer that I borrowed from my brother and took them to the winery in Bacchus Marsh. I crushed and destemmed the grapes with the help of me ol’ man then fermented it in an old oak barrel. The barrel ferment and plenty of batonnage-ing (lees stirring) is evident through some of the nougaty, biscuity characters and the full mouthfeel. It then stayed in the barrel for about 6 months until it was bottled under cork in October. It has some more developed honey and vanilla characters and is held together nicely with some acid and your typical lemon and pear notes.
Only 280 bottles of this one were made - hope you enjoy it!
